Coaching Case Study:
Antonia in Modi
Exploring how movement, imagery & physical storytelling shaped a performance from the inside out.
A behind-the-scenes look at how Liana Nyquist’s movement and character coaching supported actor Antonia’s performance in the upcoming film Modi.
"Liana takes me through the deepest journeys of my characters using Laban, animal study, imagery, and movement. Her work connects me to the emotional core before even approaching the text."
—Antonia Desplat
Coaching Collaboration: Modi (2025)
Directed by Jonny Depp
Modi explores the life of artist Amedeo Modigliani and his relationship with writer and muse Beatrice Hastings. Working closely with Antonia, Liana provided physical and psychological coaching to help shape a performance grounded in emotional complexity, instinct, and embodiment.
Visual Research & Character Embodiment
To inhabit Beatrice Hastings with truth and texture, Antonia and Liana worked from the script and together with a rich collection of references, including archival materials, Modigliani’s portraits, and documentary footage.
Screenshots from a rare documentary provided insight into Beatrice’s posture, gaze, and interior energy—elements that were translated into movement-based storytelling.
Physical Language & Performance Detail
Liana’s approach focused on drawing emotional volatility into the body. Through sessions exploring physical instability, grounded stillness, and breath-based impulse work, Antonia accessed Beatrice’s layered psyche.
Scenes such as the graveyard breakdown were built on spontaneous physical expression—crafted through movement improvisation and an open, instinctive connection to emotional states.
